Subbuteo History
The beginning
SUBBUTEO was created by Peter Adolph in 1946 and the first SUBBUTEO set contained goals made of wire with paper nets, a ball and cardboard playing figures on bases made from buttons weighed down with lead washers. These initial figures were made from flat cardboard, known later to collectors as “flats”. Both Chalk and instructions were included in the set to mark out the pitch.

1960's, 70's and 80's
During this period the game literally exploded, with 100's of teams and accessories .easily available as well as many different games sets. It was estimated during this period that 7 million people played the game.

Modern Day
The game took a big hit in the late 1990's and early 00's with the surge in electronic gaming. Although disappearing from the main stream the game went underground. It was during the pandemic of 2020 that we saw a huge interest in the game re-emerge. Ireland now has 4 active clubs with a circuit of five competitions as well as an All-Ireland tournament. In the UK and mainland Europe the interest is probably more intense.
The playing of the game has altered slightly with astro-pitches, metal goals, flatter based players and suave balls played on a table top height boards, being the norm at clubs and competitions.
